Wedding Day Pet Peeves: 6 Things That Make Even a Calm Wedding Planner Roll Her Eyes 🙄

3 min read

I always get told how calm I am on a wedding day. The couple and suppliers tend to comment on how unflappable I am from morning to last dance. But I'm also human, remember… Here are six things that, after years of planning weddings, that still make me roll my eyes. 🙄😂

(Psst — if you're currently planning your own wedding, consider this your friendly heads-up on the small details that make a big difference.)

1. Groomsmen Putting On Their Own Buttonholes

Sideways, half falling off, pins on the outside of the jacket… they always just look horrendous. Buttonholes are a tiny detail, but they're in every single close-up photo of the groom and his party.

The fix: Just let me (or your florist) do it, okay? 😂 A properly pinned buttonhole takes seconds and photographs beautifully.

2. Water for Guests in Plastic Cups

Especially if it's sitting on the side of the bar. It's a wedding, not a nightclub. Water is an absolute essential when you've got 100 people in a room all day, dancing and drinking and it deserves better than a flimsy plastic cup.

The fix: Hire glassware. Always. Or ask your bar to supply glassware. 👌🏼 Your photographer will thank you, your guests will thank you, and so will the planet.

3. Reading Your Vows From Your Phone

Seriously! It takes five minutes to write your vows in a little notebook — or even just on a nice piece of paper. It looks so impersonal, and it's not great in photos either.

The words you're saying are probably the most beautiful part of your whole day. Take a little more care over how you present them, too.

4. Caterers Charging Less for Disposables Than Glassware Hire

Yes, it's backwards that plastic cups cost less than washing a glass out, but what a way to look after the world. 🙄

The fix: Bars and catering companies - incentivise your couples! Charge more for disposables than glassware, plate and cutlery hire. Disposables are so lazy. 🤷🏻‍♀️

5. Wedding Flip-Flops and Slippers for Guests 🩴

When did we forget that our guests are adults who can make their own decisions? We used to assume guests would bring a spare pair of shoes if they wanted one.

It's a lovely intention but I have picked up hundreds of discarded odd flip-flops and slippers off a dance floor, just to stop it looking messy. It's a vibe killer for me 😬

The fix: Put it in your invitations for guests to wear appropriate footwear or bring a spare pair!

6. Forgetting Dietary Requirements for the Wedding Cake

You spent so much effort making sure your guests with allergies had something safe to eat at dinner… and then they don't get to join in with the wedding cake. 😢

The fix: If you only have a few dietary requirements to cover, a free-from supermarket cake costs less than a fiver. It's such an easy way to make sure nobody's left out of the moment.

Over to You

Those are my six wedding day pet peeves for now but I'm sure I'll come across more! Do you agree? Have you been a guest at a wedding and seen something terrible? Or are you a wedding supplier with a few of your own? Let me know in the comments or drop me a message - I'd love to hear what makes you roll your eyes at a wedding!
